1. (Starter) The importance of body language - Duration 10-15 mins

  • In order to examine the importance of body language and non-verbal communication, students are presented with images of four different individuals accompanied by a phrase. In groups students consider how the individual would say that phrase and act out a number of interpretations for the class.
  • Students then fill in a table explaining what they think certain facial expressions convey.
  • Consider the importance of non-verbal communication.
  • Consider the importance of delivery when creating a character.

2. Writing to inform - Duration 10-15 mins

  • Students examine the Speaking and Listening mark scheme in order to recognise the importance of creating a credible character before brainstorming the best way to achieve this. Differentiated Student Worksheets are provided.
  • Introduce a quick refresher activity which asks students to recognise which of techniques can be used when writing to inform.
  • Understand how marks are allocated during speaking and listening exercises.

3. Creating a character - Duration 20-30 mins

  • Student Worksheets containing information on a number of British Service Personnel's experiences are distributed.
  • Students read through the information and use it as a basis for the creation of a character. The character in question should be a veteran who spent time as a Prisoner of War (POW).
  • Students write questions to be asked to the character during an interview and consider the answers which they would give.
  • Understand the hardships which some members of the British Armed Forces suffered as Prisoners of War.
  • Using source material to inform the creation of a character.

4. Interviews - Duration 15-20 mins

  • Students conduct their interviews in pairs before filling in an assessment sheet in order to provide constructive criticism for their partner.
  • The best pairs could be asked to act out their interview for the rest of the class.
  • Convincingly portray a character.

5. (Plenary) The Government's role - Duration 5-10 mins
