Development, trade and aid

5. How to improve development - Aid

Required Resources

  • Slides 32-36
  • Student Worksheets 2-3
  • Video: Defence News Report - Tropical storms
  • Video: Training Iraqi troops
  • Video: Military aid in Sudan
  • Video: Training Iraqi troops

Delivery

  • Explain that aid is the movement of resources or provision of services from MEDC's to LEDC's. Aid can be in response to a sudden short term emergency or an attempt to help with more deeply and longer established problems.
  • Display Slide 32 which explains the different types of aid which can be given.
  • Divide the class into small groups and distribute a copy of Student Worksheets 3a-e to each group.
  • Student Worksheets 3a-d provide information on aid which the UK Government has provided to LEDC's. Ask students to use the information to complete the table on Student Worksheet 2.
  • The videos attached to this lesson provide a further insight to the work described on Student Worksheet 3b, 3c and 3d. The Tropical Storms video does not portray the same event as Worksheet 3c but it gives an insight to humanitarian aid.
  • Students should divide the Student Worksheets amongst themselves in order to digest the information more efficiently.
  • Conduct a brief classroom discussion of their answers. Display Slide 33 which contains images of the British Government delivering aid.
  • Display Slides 34-36 which explain the role of the British Government's Conflict Prevention Pool (CPP) and discuss its relevance to development.
  • You should make sure you explain to students that all decisions regarding the provision of aid are made by the British Government with the Armed Forces carrying out the operations.
