4. How to improve development - Trade
Required Resources
- Slides 17-31
- Video: Anti-piracy work
Delivery
- Suggest that the world can be broadly divided into two categories - More Economically Developed Countries (MEDCs) and Less Economically Developed Countries (LEDCs). Outline the key characteristics of both using Slides 17-22.
- Display Slide 23 and explain that the main ways of stimulating development are through trade and aid.
- Use Slides 24-26 to examine the importance of trade to development and the trade relationships which exist between MEDC's and LEDC's.
- Use Slide 27 to explain that multinational organisations such as the European Union (EU) and World Trade Organisation (WTO) try to encourage trade between countries in order to encourage development.
- Explain that the British Government also plays an active role in facilitating and encouraging trade, something which can be seen most clearly through the support role of the MOD. Show Slides 28-31 and Video: Anti-piracy work, which shows the Navy's role in protecting trade routes off the coast of Somalia from piracy.
