2. The 4 Rs - Duration 10 mins

  • The class is split into groups with each group examining the definition of one of the 4 Rs and considering how it can be applied to everyday life.
  • After five minutes Students join up with members of the other groups and exchange definitions and ideas for applications.
  • Understand the definitions of various processes which can be used to reduce waste.

3. Recycling or Reusing? - Duration 10 mins

  • Students are introduced to the importance of recycling to British Government departments such as the MOD.
  • They are then shown a video of British Armed Forces work in Bosnia, melting down weapons to produce iron rods used in housing development and discuss the military, environmental and social impact this process would have had on the country.

4. Design task - Duration 30 mins

  • Students are shown an extract from a news article about members of the British Armed Forces building a playground for deaf children in Gambia.
  • Students are split into groups of three and given a design brief which asks them to complete the same exercise but re-using old materials from the MOD's sites and military vehicles in the process.
  • Creatively consider alternative uses of materials.
  • Recognise the diverse work which members of the British armed Forces carry out around the world.
  • Design individual components and consider how they would work together on a given site.

5. Plenary: Present and discuss - Duration 15-20 mins

  • Students consider how the 4 Rs could be embraced further by the MOD, either on operations or at the main building in Whitehall.
  • Analyse how well a design meets a given brief and provide productive criticism.
