Recycling

2. The 4 Rs

Required Resources

  • Student Worksheet 1

Delivery

  • Divide the class into four large groups and distribute a copy of Student Worksheet 1 to each group.
  • The Student Worksheet contains a definition of either 'Reduce', 'Reuse', 'Recover' or 'Recycle'.
  • In their groups ask students to discuss ways in which they could apply their particular R to everyday life (for example reusing old tyres from military vehicles, or the auctioning of MOD equipment) and note them down in the table on Student Worksheet 1.
  • Ask the students to reform into groups of four with each group containing one person from the four larger groups. These new groups should then share their definitions and suggestions for its application.
  • Using the feedback from the other members of their group students should complete the other rows in the table.

Differentiation

Lower Ability:

Lower ability students may find it difficult to grasp the relevance of each definition to minimising the use of resources, in this case it may prove useful to circulate amongst the groups in order to help with the initial discussion of the definition at the beginning of this episode.

Higher Ability:

Higher ability students could be asked to complete the Student Worksheet in pairs and make suggestions for how all four principles couldbe applied in everyday life. Conduct a class discussion to gather students' responses.
