Further Opportunities for Learning

This project could be continued as homework, allowing the students lesson time to begin developing their ideas before assigning each member of the group a specific role in the design process (Transport Planner, Environmental Planner, Building Designer or Utilities Designer). They could then develop each area individually before combining their ideas in the next lesson.

Students should be encouraged to engage in a role-play exercise in which the different members of the group meet as a 'Project Committee' to discuss the venture. With further time allocated to this lesson, students could put together a much more extensive presentation, including additional drawings or models of buildings and a PowerPoint presentation explaining the reasoning behind the decisions which they have made.

You could present students with specific requirements and a budget to produce a redevelopment plan for their house or school using the Sustainable Design Calculator.
