Sustainable housing development
Sustainable garrisons
Synopsis
This lesson helps students to understand the issues surrounding sustainable development by encouraging them to design a sustainable garrison housing scheme, placing particular emphasis on environmental, social and economic considerations. Students will firstly revise the difference between renewable and non-renewable resources and the overarching theme of sustainable development. They are then encouraged to apply their knowledge through the design of a sustainable garrison housing scheme, balancing the introduction of eco-friendly elements with the constraints of a clients brief. Using a Sustainable Design Calculator in Excel and information about different sustainable designs and products, the students' objective is to maximise their sustainability score within their £1 million budget.
The lesson plan timings have been extended across a 2 hour period. To ensure students reap the full benefits of this activity and the materials that are provided, it is essential that they are given time to absorb the information, brainstorm their designs as a team, produce their proposal and then present and feed back.
This lesson provides a great opportunity to develop key skills including teamwork, presentation, numeracy and ICT.
