Writing to argue (rhetorical)

5. Compare and contrast

Required Resources

  • Student Worksheet 2-4

Delivery

  • Make sure each student is given a copy of the second speech (the one which they did not study in Episode 4) and a copy of Student Worksheet 4 which provides a writing frame to guide the planning of their work.
  • Students are to carry out the exercises detailed on Worksheets 4a-4d. Once they have completed their plan they can be asked to write the comparative piece either in class or as a piece of homework.
  • Students should understand that the ongoing presence of UK troops in Iraq is decided by the Government and not by the Armed Forces.

Differentiation

Lower Ability:

Some lower ability students may struggle with a comparative analysis. They could use the writing frame on Student Worksheet 3 to plan and write an in depth analysis of just one of the speeches.
