- 2. The Iraq War
Writing to argue (rhetorical)
2. The Iraq War
Required Resources
- Slides 1-6
- Student Worksheet 1
Delivery
- Project Slides 1-3 which briefly outline the background to the 2003 Iraq War.
- Slides 4-6 explain the current situation in Iraq and outline the role which members of the British Armed Forces are playing.
- Split the class into pairs and distribute a copy of Student Worksheet 1 to each pair. Explain that opinion is split over whether the UK should maintain a military presence in Iraq. Using the information they have been presented with so far and their own knowledge ask students to discuss the issue of continued British military presence in Iraq with their partner.
Differentiation
Lower Ability:
Some students of lower ability may require some guidance in the discussion and may benefit from mixed ability pairs. Newsround has some good background information on Iraq that would be well suited to students of lower reading ability. http://news.bbc.co.uk/cbbcnews/hi/specials/iraq/default.stm
