Required Resources

Delivery

  • Display Slides 16-17 which provide a brief overview of the ATA explaining what the organisation was, why it was formed and why it recruited women.
  • Explain that the following task should help the students to answer this question:
    • Why was the work of the ATA important to the war effort?
  • Explain that in order to make an informed judgement regarding the importance of the ATA the students must also understand the role of the RAF during the Second World War.
  • Set up four different stations (two with different information regarding the ATA and two with information about the RAF) with each station comprising of three sources of information, with Student Worksheets or Videos.
  • Divide the students into groups of four, preferably of mixed ability. Two members should collect information on the ATA and two on the RAF.
  • One student from each group should go to each station to spend fifteen minutes collecting information from the appropriate Student Worksheets. Each student from the group should come back with different information about the organisation they were investigating.
  • Two of the sources of information are videos which the whole class might benefit from viewing as they act as engaging stimulus.
