Required Resources

  • Poster paper
  • Slides 20-21

Delivery

  • Now that students have an overall understanding of some of the main items of British combat clothing, they should use their knowledge to design their own unrivalled combat clothing for the future soldier. Project Slides 20-21 which presents a brief. They should work in the same groups and can either write a simple design proposal or annotate a drawing, highlighting some of the key design features and benefits. They could select to modernise an item of kit or design a full combat outfit. They will need to consider the nature and environment of the wars that they will be fighting in the future. You may want to revert to Slide 2 which lists the functions as this can help to think of ideas.
  • You should encourage students to be as creative as possible and clarify that there is no right or wrong design. You may choose for the students to present their designs to the class, or they could be submitted and displayed around the classroom. You could even organise an autonomous vote. Note that this activity could form a separate lesson on product development. This would allow students to produce thorough designs and to present them to the class.
