2: Design considerations

Required Resources

  • Video: Extreme environments
  • Poster paper for brainstorm
  • Slides 10-15

Delivery

  • Play Video: Extreme environments, which shows British military personnel in combat clothing and the variety of environments in which they have to operate.
  • For each item of clothing (helmets, waterproofs and camouflage), brainstorm the key design considerations which are detailed on Slides 10-11. Then go on to discuss some generic design influences across all elements of combat clothing. These may have been covered in the brainstorm, in which case you can just reveal the answers on Slide 12-13.
  • When the MOD is sourcing and developing kit for the British Armed Forces, it is essential that they consider all the discussed factors to ensure they are supplying the most technologically advanced items to meet military needs. Present Slides 14-15 which introduce the clothing team of Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S), the MOD department that supplies clothing and equipment to the British Armed Forces.

Differentiation

Lower Ability:

Some students may need prompting questions to assist the brainstorm. When discussing design influences you could provide prompts such as 'environment' and then ask students to think of examples.
Mixed ability groups for brainstorms.
