Human rights

1. Starter: Human rights

Required Resources

  • Pens, paper and education resources

Delivery

  • On half the desks of your class, place writing materials, some education resources and drinking water. Ensure that the rest of the room is kept bare.
  • Allow half your students into the class and tell them to make themselves comfortable at the desks.
  • The remaining half, should be instructed to sit on the floor (if clean, otherwise they should stand) and once seated, hand out one sheet of paper and one pencil between five students. Explain that this is all that's available and that they'll have to share.
  • On the paper each person must write down how they are feeling now and how they feel about the people at the desks.
  • Feedback, drawing out idea that the people on the floor are not having their human rights respected.
  • You should emphasise that this is a role play activity and that it does not reflect any real human rights issues within the class.
  • Redistribute class and allow all students to be seated.
  • Introduce the learning objectives.
