Conflict and cooperation

Preparation and Planning

In this lesson you will be covering some sensitive issues around personal and global conflicts. When considering personal conflicts, you should emphasise that individuals should not be identified. You will need to be aware of any students who have experienced the issues that are discussed e.g. refugees, or those who may have family involved in the Bosnian situation or have cultural empathy e.g. Muslims. You should be aware of any students who are affected by the discussions and should offer them opportunity to discuss their feelings after the lesson.

You will need to photocopy enough copies of each Student Worksheet for every student. You will need ICT access to play the videos.

Further Opportunities for Learning

The Human Rights Lesson Plan provides an excellent extension from this lesson and encourages students to learn about human rights issues in the complex context of the Bosnian War.

To appreciate the impact of conflict on individuals, students could act as a journalist and prepare some questions that they would ask to a victim of a conflict. This could be someone from Bosnia or another conflict. Once they have prepared their questions, they should swap with a partner and each student should compile answers based on what they think the victims' response might be.

Collect media coverage about current international conflicts or disputes. Identify the reasons, stages and consequences of conflict. Go on to debate how the conflict could or has been resolved. You could produce a wall collage.

Complete a study of the Balkans region today and research the current conflict in Kosovo. Discuss how this conflict could be resolved and whether any further involvement from international or UK forces is required.
