Conflict and cooperation
3: The Balkans
Required Resources
- Slides 9-23
- Student Worksheet 2
Delivery
- Ask students to volunteer any information they know about the Balkans conflict.
- Use Slides 9-19 to explain the Balkans conflict.
- Once you have used the Slides to give context to the Balkans crisis, you should then focus on the war in Bosnia-Herzegovina.
- Students should now complete Student Worksheet 2 which reinforces their understanding about the Bosnia-Herzegovina war. After a mapping exercise, students are required to consider the following questions:
- Which ethnic groups were involved in the Bosnia-Herzegovina war?
- What were the reasons for conflict?
- What were the key stages of the conflict?
- What were the consequences of the conflict?
- Feedback as a class. Slides 21-23 reveal some suggestions to aid discussion. Acknowledge that this was a very complex conflict and that it has been simplified for the purpose of this exercise.
