Conflict and cooperation

3: The Balkans

Required Resources

  • Slides 9-23
  • Student Worksheet 2

Delivery

  • Ask students to volunteer any information they know about the Balkans conflict.
  • Use Slides 9-19 to explain the Balkans conflict.
  • Once you have used the Slides to give context to the Balkans crisis, you should then focus on the war in Bosnia-Herzegovina.
  • Students should now complete Student Worksheet 2 which reinforces their understanding about the Bosnia-Herzegovina war. After a mapping exercise, students are required to consider the following questions:
    • Which ethnic groups were involved in the Bosnia-Herzegovina war?
    • What were the reasons for conflict?
    • What were the key stages of the conflict?
    • What were the consequences of the conflict?
  • Feedback as a class. Slides 21-23 reveal some suggestions to aid discussion. Acknowledge that this was a very complex conflict and that it has been simplified for the purpose of this exercise.
