The role of women in WW2
2. Roam and report
Required Resources
- Student Worksheets 1-16
- Video: Role of women in the Second World War
Delivery
- Divide the students into groups of four, preferably of mixed ability. Each member of the group should be assigned one of the following services - Air Transport Auxiliary, Women's Land Army, Factory Work, and Women's Voluntary service - on which to collect information.
- The teacher should have set up four different stations (one for each service) with each station comprising of four separate Student Worksheets. Students should be given 15 minutes to go to the relevant station and collect information from the Student Worksheets and attempt to answer the following questions:
- a) How did British women contribute during World War 2?
- b) How did their contribution affect the war effort?
- N.B. one source is a video which will need to be shown to the students collecting information on the ATA, perhaps at a low volume to minimise disturbance to the students collecting information on different subjects.
Differentiation
Lower Ability:
Lower ability students can be asked to collect the information on only two of the four sheets which make up each work-station.
Higher Ability:
Students can be asked to carry out their own research on the organisation which they are investigating using the internet or the school's library.
