The role of women in WW2

1. Starter: A vital role

Required Resources

  • Slides 1-9

Delivery

  • Explain the lesson's learning objectives to the students and offer students the opportunity to ask any questions they might have.
  • Display Slides 1-9 which contain images of women's contrasting contributions to the war effort during both the First and Second World Wars. The pictures from the Second World War show women working in munitions factories, helping with the harvest in the Women's Land Army (WLA) or working in the Women's Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF), Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA) or Auxiliary Transport Service (ATS).
  • Whilst displaying the Slides ask the students to try and recognise the key occupations and skill areas occupied by women during the First and Second World Wars.
  • Conduct a Q&A session focusing on how the roles which women played during each World War appear to have changed. Explain that following the First World War the suffragette movement achieved its goal of universal suffrage.
