2: Importance of freedom - Duration 20 mins

  • (In pairs) students discuss their human right to freedom and social justice. Would they have had freedom and social justice if the War against Germany and the Axis powers, which included The Battle of Britain, had not been won? How might things be different today?
  • Ask students record their thoughts on Student Worksheet 2.
  • Recognise the importance of freedom.
  • Consider how life would be different with less freedom or social justice.
  • Consider whether it is justified to curtail some freedoms in the short term in order to protect more significant freedoms in the long term.

3: For and against - Duration 20 mins

  • Students should now be split into two large groups representing the different (potential) outcomes of the Battle of Britain and World War 2 for Britain.
  • Each side should discuss some of the implications to freedom and justice for their particular outcome to the War. Students should use the discussion guide on Student Worksheet 3 to guide their preparations for the discussion.
  • An organised discussion should now ensue between the two sides.
  • Participate in a well-structured discussion.
