Abolition of the Slave Trade
2. Timeline
Required Resources
- Slides 8-16
- Student Worksheet 2
- 1 set of cards per group
Delivery
- Explain to students that despite slavery having been banned in England many anti-slavery campaigners were still dissatisfied as it was the trade directly between Africa and countries in the America's which was particularly problematic.
- Display Slides 10-15 which shows information on key figures such as William Wilberforce, Olaudah Equiano and James Ramsay.
- Split the students into groups of four and distribute one set of cards and a copy of Student Worksheet 2 to each group. Ask the groups to put the events on the card into chronological order and fill in the results on the incomplete timeline on Student Worksheet 2.
- Display Slide 16 which will display the timeline. As you click the mouse, it will reveal the answer to another of the blanks. Ask each group to contribute an answer, helping to fill in the blanks.
Differentiation
Lower Ability:
Mixed ability groups will aid differentiation.
Higher Ability:
Students could be asked to write a short paragraph outlining the significance of one of the campaigners detailed in Slides 10-15, explaining their motives behind campaigning against abolition, the action that they took and the effects that it had.
