Abolition of the Slave Trade
1. Starter: Introduction to abolition
Required Resources
- Slides 1-7
- Student Worksheet 1
Delivery
- Divide the students into pairs and distribute a copy of Student Worksheet 1 to each pair, which show images of shackles / slave ships / plantations etc.
- Ask the pairs to look at the images on the worksheet and to discuss what they understand by the term slavery. Students to feedback whilst teacher notes down their thoughts on the board.
- Ask students to discuss whether or not they thought Britain was involved in slavery and if so how.
- Display Slides 1-4 which briefly outline the early history of the Slave Trade and Britain's involvement.
- Ask students if they know when slavery was abolished in England.
- Display Slides 5-6 which provides students with an overview of Lord Mansfield's initial ruling that slavery was not legal in England.
- Display Slide 7 which will show a timeline ending with Lord Mansfield's ruling. Explain that Britain was the first country in the world to abolish slavery.
Differentiation
