Remembrance, loss and sacrifice

5. Plenary

Required Resources

  • Slide 39
  • Video: HRH Prince Charles and remembrance

Delivery

  • At this point, it is worth highlighting that every person who joins the Armed Forces, risks their lives in service to our country. This is the greatest sacrifice anyone could offer. Even if they do not loose their own life, they may experience the loss of a colleague and are required to carry out duty in extremely demanding and dangerous circumstances. Present Slide 41 which shows a quote from HRH Prince of Wales. You could ask students to discuss the meaning of words that are underlined. Time permitting, students could also volunteer the names of other professions in which people put their lives at risk in the course of duty.
  • Acknowledge that as the generations that fought our two World Wars pass, the oral tradition that connects us to these events fades and the duty of remembering and celebrating the courage of veterans devolves to younger generations, such as the student's own generation. Close the class by playing Video: HRH Prince Charles and remembrance, which presents HRH Prince Charles reiterating the quote on the slides.
