Remembrance, loss and sacrifice

4. Personal stories

Required Resources

  • Video: Personal accounts of loss
  • Slide 38
  • Student Worksheet 1

Delivery

  • Play Video: Personal accounts of loss, which presents a range of friends and families talking about their lost loved ones -past and present. The material is quite emotive and so you should be sensitive towards any students who become affected by the content or who have lost family members or friends in the Armed Forces.
  • At the end of the Videos ask students how they feel? You could use Slide 40 which provides a list of emotive words to help them describe their feelings.
  • Now ask students to get back into their groups and to revisit the questions and answers on Student Worksheet 1. They should complete the 'Thought 2' column. If their responses have changed then ask them to write their comments in the second column.
  • Once all groups have completed the exercise, you should go through the questions and ask for a show of hands to see who has changed their views. Ask a selection of pupils to explain the changes.

Differentiation

Lower Ability:

Ensure you ask a selection of higher and lower ability students to share any changes in their views.

Higher Ability:

Higher ability students should be encouraged to explain why their views have changed and they could challenge others in a debate style discussion. Students should provide effective reasoned arguments.
