Remembrance, loss and sacrifice

3. Remembering past, present and future

Required Resources

  • Slide 28-37

Delivery

  • Present Slide 28 which shows a series of images from the Armed Forces Memorial. You could play music at this moment to set the mood. Classical music tracks can be downloaded from a number of websites including www.classicfm.co.uk. Students should be encouraged to share their initial reaction to the memorial and how they think they might feel if they visited it.
  • Using Slides 29-31, give background to the Memorial and explain why it is unique and so relevant today. Throughout the Slides there are questions for class discussion to challenge the students' views about the different ways that members of the Armed Forces die and which members should be remembered.

Differentiation

Lower Ability:

Ensure mixed ability students are given the opportunity to share their thoughts. Lower ability students may benefit from thinking time.
