Remembrance, loss and sacrifice

2: What are Memorials?

Required Resources

  • Slides 9-27
  • Student Worksheet 1

Delivery

  • Project Slide 8 which shows a range of war memorials from all over the world. Students should ask questions to identify that they are all war memorials. Project and distribute the Compass Rose (Slide 9) to introduce the following exercise, which invites students to deduce as much information as they can from a series of images. Students will quickly ascertain that they are all memorials, but should be encouraged to consider what else is evident. Select the level of detail depending on time and class ability. Slide 26 clarifies what is meant by the term 'veteran' to assist understanding throughout this lesson.
  • Working in small groups or pairs, ask students to use Student Worksheet 1 to discuss and write their thoughts about the importance of remembering past, present and future members of the Armed Forces who have died, and the appropriateness of war memorials. They should record their answers in the 'Thoughts 1' column. The 'Thoughts 2' column is completed when these questions are revisited later in the lesson.

Differentiation

Lower Ability:

You should put students in mixed ability groups or pairs to discuss the Student Worksheet.
