3. Campaign planning

Required Resources

  • A3 paper for brainstorm
  • Audio: Challenge tips
  • Slide 24
  • Student Worksheet 1

Delivery

  • Split students into small groups and explain that they are going act as a local campaign group who have come together to tackle a problem in their local area or school. They are attending an initial meeting to plan a campaign that will raise awareness of the issue and influence others to tackle the problem.
  • At this point you could play Audio: Challenge tips, so students can hear Polly's advice to anyone who is considering a challenge. This will help to motivate your students.
  • To begin this activity, each group should brainstorm and discuss things that they like about their school and local community and things that they dislike. All groups to feedback one positive and one negative aspect with this recorded on the board.
  • Each group should then select one issue and conduct a further brainstorm of ideas about how the problem could be improved.
  • To aid ideas, Slide 24 presents some examples of local issues and action.
  • Distribute Student Worksheet 1 which provides their brief and guidance notes. Emphasise that the students should be creative in their approach and can choose any vehicle to deliver their message e.g. event, PR stunt, advertising etc.
  • They will also need to prepare their presentation in this Episode. Again, encourage students to be creative in their presentation delivery but they must include the information stated in Student Worksheet 1. Ensure you allow students enough time to prepare their presentations.
