- 2. Successful campaigning
Taking action
2. Successful campaigning
Required Resources
- Slides 21-23
Delivery
- Project Slide 21 and stream the radio interview with BBC Somerset Sounds: http://www.bbc.co.uk/somerset/content/articles/2007/01/17/polly_hatchard_south_pole_trek_feature.shtml
- Acknowledge that Polly was also interviewed on BBC News television. Polly achieved successful media coverage before and after her expedition.
- Ask students to identify what features of the campaign made it successful? These can then be used to generate successful features for their own campaigns. Record students' suggestions and then reveal some answers on Slide 22.
- Do students see any risks in Polly's fundraising activity? Would they do anything differently?
- Acknowledge that Polly's expedition was a good example of how an individual can make a difference and that she successfully managed to raise funds for the charity and increased awareness on a national scale.
- Discuss whether students think they have a responsibility to help others or to tackle issues, both globally and locally.
- Ask students to suggest ways that individuals can make a difference to a charitable cause or issue. Use Slide 23 to demonstrate some of these ways.
