Bikinis for Breast Cancer

Synopsis

Good citizenship includes being aware of other people's needs and taking responsibility for doing something which will support their needs. Many individuals and organisations within the MOD and Armed Forces support their local communities and a wide range of charities.

During this lesson students learn about Royal Navy (RN) Lieutenant Polly Hatchard's creative approach to raising funds for and awareness of Breast Cancer. Polly was the first British military female to reach the South Pole and when she made it to her destination, she posed in a pink bikini which successfully received a significant amount of print and TV coverage, helping to raise awareness of the cause. In this lesson, students review Polly's successful activity and are then required to plan their own campaign to raise awareness of an issue in the school or local community. They then present their plans to the class who role-play the target audience and decide whether they feel influenced to support the campaign.

This lesson can also support the QCA Unit 07: Taking part - planning a community event. It requires excellent team work under timed and pressured conditions. Peer and individual assessment will help to identify areas for improvement in the future. Activities are also suitable for Citizenship Day.

Lower ability students will:

• Produce a plan for a fundraising or awareness campaign with assistance.
• Good teamwork and presentation skills.
• Be aware that individuals and organisations with the MOD engage in a range of charitable events for different reasons e.g. personal affiliation with the cause, exposure to issues when overseas etc.

Average ability students will:

• Evaluate an awareness campaign using Lt Polly Hatchard (RN) as an example.
• Produce a creative and strategic plan for an awareness campaign about an issue in their school or local area and influence others to support their cause.
• Develop excellent teamwork, leadership and presentation skills.
• Understand that individuals and organisations with the MOD engage in a range of charitable events and appreciate people have different motivations e.g. personal affiliation with the cause, exposure to issues when overseas etc.

Higher ability students will:

• Critically evaluate an existing awareness campaign using Lt Polly Hatchard (RN) as an example.
• Produce a creative and strategic plan for an awareness campaign about an issue in their school or local area and effectively influence others to support their cause.
• Use excellent teamwork, leadership and presentation skills.
• Understand that individuals and organisations with the MOD engage in a range of charitable events and will fully appreciate that people have different motivations e.g. personal affiliation with the cause, exposure to issues when overseas etc.
