3: Research and gather

Required Resources

  • Slide 13

Delivery

  • Students are told they need to gather as much information as possible about Physical Related Fitness (PRF) and Skill Related Fitness (SRF).
  • Students should be encouraged to discuss any information they struggle with or to ask questions to help their understanding of both PRF and SRF.
  • Key points can be written down if needed.
  • The class should then be split into small groups and each group given one aspect of fitness to research (this can be either a PRF or SRF-related aspect of fitness). This can be selected from Slide 13.
  • Groups are required to research information about their aspect of fitness and produce a test to measure that aspect.
  • Students should research any equipment that is required and how to perform the test fairly and accurately so that it can be set up as a practical session during the next lesson.
  • Once they have devised a test, students should produce a recording sheet for participants to use during a practical period.
  • Students should also write advice on the best methods of training to improve their particular aspect of fitness.
  • Groups should be encouraged to adhere to health and safety requirements to reduce risks.
  • As a final exercise, students must give an example of why they think a Royal Marine might require their allocated aspect of fitness in order to perform his job properly.
  • Students can research information relating to Royal Marine fitness by visiting the website at: www.royal-marines.mod.uk
  • Further information relating to the Royal Marines can be found in the supporting Teacher Notes.
