Sustainability evaluation
Defence Estates Sustainability Appraisal
Synopsis
This lesson provides students with an overview of sustainable development and the social, economic and environmental aspects of the concept. This is supported with a Sustainability Appraisal Matrix that has been designed by the Ministry of Defence (MOD).
Using the matrix and a case study about a Model Iraqi village that is used for military training in the UK, students conduct an appraisal of a new MOD development to assess its social, economic and environmental impact. They then assess a development or activity in their own local area using the matrix. The appraisal tool helps students to identify methodically the key considerations and issues related to sustainable development. This lesson helps students to develop group working, communication and methodological thinking skills.
