Conservation

4. Conservation debate

Required Resources

  • Slides 8-14
  • News Article - Armtrac Vehicle

Delivery

  • Each group should present their conclusions. The method of presentation will depend on the report format that you choose. Conduct peer assessment by asking students to comment positively and negatively on their respective findings. This complements the Assessment for Learning (AFL) policy in schools.
  • Project Slides 8-14 which explains the work carried out by Defence Estates and goes on to present some key statistics about the biodiversity on Salisbury Plain. The class should then discuss and debate whether the MOD has a role in protecting these species. Should they be doing any more or less to conserve the land and the many rare species that have been preserved over the years? You can use the information in the Teacher Notes to build your own understanding.
  • The News Article on the Armtrack vehicle could be distributed after the students have presented their conclusions. This is a vehicle that is used by Defence Estates to remove the scrub.

Differentiation

Lower Ability:

Students may require time to prepare their presentations. They should use Student Worksheet 1a-1d as a guide to structuring their presentation.

Higher Ability:

You should ask students for justification of their answers and their opinions should be challenged.
