Analysing persuasive text

5. Written analysis

Required Resources

  • Student Worksheet 3: Propaganda analysis
  • Video: London can take it (9 mins)
  • Slide 14

Delivery

  • In this Episode, students will write an analysis of a specific piece of propaganda material. Both print and moving image examples have been provided for you to assign to relevant higher or lower ability students. Distribute Student Worksheet 3 which sets the task and includes the poster for analysis. All students are required to answer the following questions:
    • What are the intended (emotional/intellectual) effects of the propaganda example materials?
    • Explain the devices being employed to achieve these effects?
    • Evaluate their effectiveness against their intended purpose. How well are they achieving their desired goals? Justify your explanation.
  • Students should complete their analysis, plan their written piece and then write up a minimum of 200 words.
  • Slide 14 provides a colour version of the posters so you don't need to print the Student Worksheet in colour. To avoid distraction, you should play the propaganda video to higher ability students in a separate room with ICT access. You may enable students to watch the video independently on PC's so they can stop and start during their analysis.
  • There are two poster options provided. The analysis of the posters is good preparation for their poetry exam as it is focused on writing a lot about a little. Students need to be encouraged to pick out examples and explain how the techniques help to support the purpose of the piece for its given audience and reflect the ideas, attitudes and feelings of the period in which it was produced.
