Analysing persuasive text

4. Moving image

Required Resources

  • Video: Special Invasion (7 mins)
  • Video: Salvage with a smile (7 mins)
  • Video: Hitler assumes command (3 mins)
  • Slide 13

Delivery

  • Reiterate that propaganda is not limited to print media and that many of the same imagery and language techniques apply equally to moving image. A selection of propaganda videos has been supplied but the level of detail in which these are analysed and discussed depends on class ability and time available. The next Episode allows higher ability students to analyse a propaganda video in more detail. The aim of this Episode is to reinforce the understanding that persuasive techniques can be used across a range of media.
  • You could encourage both lower and higher ability students to comment on the content and mood of the images and sound to show that video is not that dissimilar to print. One technique that is unique to moving image due to its sequential nature is 'selection' and 'compression'. Use Slides 13 to explain what is meant by 'selection' and 'compression.'

Differentiation

Lower Ability:

Students should grasp that persuasive technique can be used in moving image but are not required to evaluate a specific example.

Higher Ability:

Students should be able to identify how selection and compression could be used in the videos that are presented.
