Homeostasis

Lesson Plan

1. Starter - Extreme climates - Duration 5-10 mins

Episode

Learning Objectives

Resources

  • Project Slides 2-3 with images of extreme hot and cold climates. Ask students how they think they would feel? What kinds of physical reactions do they think might occur?
  • Project Slides 4-5 of Polly Hatchard standing at the South Pole in a bikini and ask what feelings the image evokes? Play audio to provide an introduction to the case study.
  • Introduction to the concept that the body changes to deal with different external environments.
  • Slides
  • Audio: Expedition introduction

2. What is homeostasis? - Duration 10-15 mins

Episode

Learning Objectives

Resources

  • Project Slides 6-20 which explains homeostasis and provides the theoretical underpinning for the lesson and case study. Explain that this lesson is focused on temperature - Thermoregulation.
  • Students complete Student Worksheet 1 which is a flow diagram of thermoregulation .
  • Learn what is meant by homeostasis and the main homeostatic mechanisms.
  • Learn how the body maintains a constant temperature.
  • Slides
  • Student Worksheet 1

3. Preparation - Duration 10-15 mins

Episode

Learning Objectives

Resources

  • Play Audio 2: Antarctica challenge, and present Slides 21-25.
  • Using Student Worksheet 2, students prepare a list of equipment that they would take on the expedition to deal with the conditions.
  • Play Audio: Survival kit present Slides 28-29. Students can check to see how much of their equipment was correct.
  • At this stage you could also play Video: HMS Endurance in Antarctica, to help students appreciate the extreme external conditions that Polly had to deal with.
  • Learn what humans can do to help the body maintain a constant internal environment.
  • Audio: Antarctica challenge
  • Slides
  • Student Worksheet 2
  • Audio: Survival kit
  • Video: HMS Endurance in Antarctica

4. The big challenge - Duration 20-25 mins

Episode

Learning Objectives

Resources

  • Students listen to a range of audio clips where Polly describes her challenges and physical reactions whilst trekking. Students should complete Student Worksheet 3 to identify the physical changes homeostatic mechanisms.
  • Present Slides 30-37 to provide visuals of Polly trekking.
  • Identify homeostatic mechanisms.
  • Slides
  • Student Worksheet 3
  • Audio: Audio clips x 4 (7m 26s)
  • Video: HMS Endurance in Antarctica

5. Plenary - Victory - Duration 5-10 mins

Episode

Learning Objectives

Resources

  • Play Audio and present Slides 38-40
  • Ask students to offer their own experiences of putting their body under extreme circumstances and ask how they felt physically and mentally.
  • Discuss a range of environments and circumstances that challenge the body's internal environment.
  • Slides
  • Audio: Victory at the South Pole (1m 24s)
  • Video: Extreme working conditions
