Bearings

Lesson Plan

1. (Starter) Low visibility navigation - Duration 5-10 mins

Episode

Learning Objectives

Resources

  • This activity sets the scene for the lesson - introducing the work of QRA and inviting pairs of students to name their respective teams. Students must navigate their aircraft from Glasgow in Scotland to an unidentified destination via two separate routes in bad weather.
  • Revision of key skills: angle measurement, distance measurement.
  • Understand the need for accuracy.
  • Understand the compounded impact of error over distance.
  • Introduction of key vocabulary.
  • Video: Flight planning
  • Slides
  • Student Worksheet 1 (printed with no margins)

2. Reconnaissance - Duration 15 - 25 mins

Episode

Learning Objectives

Resources

  • In this unit students take their first reconnaissance brief, plotting routes for a number of aircraft on reconnaissance. Students must initially review a table containing details of planned headings and airspeeds of various aircraft and then accurately plot their routes on a scale map of the area to be surveyed, to help answer a series of questions concerning bearings and back bearings.
  • Revision of bearings and back-bearings.
  • Work with varied map scales.
  • Deal with multiple data sources.
  • Slides
  • Student Worksheet 2 (printed with no margins)
  • Video: Visualising the topography

3. Surveillance - Duration 20 - 30 mins

Episode

Learning Objectives

Resources

  • The role of surveillance of fisheries normally falls to the Royal Navy. However in this next briefing it is apparent that this was prohibited by high seas. The radar has identified 6 unrecognised vessels off the North Coast. Students must plot the shortest course for one aircraft to fly over each of these vessels in turn before returning to base.
  • Develop problem solving skills.
  • Develop teamwork skills.
  • Consider 3D application of 2D diagrams.
  • Slides
  • Student Worksheet 3 (printed with no margins)
  • Video: Respective roles of pilot and navigator

4. Interception and identification - Duration 15 - 25 mins

Episode

Learning Objectives

Resources

  • The final task invites teams to deal with a 'live' incident, in which unknown aircraft have entered UK airspace and must be intercepted and identified. A prompt, accurate response is critical and students must use a range of skills to determine the appropriate course of action.
  • Work under pressure.
  • Accuracy.
  • Problem solving skills.
  • Slides
  • Student Worksheet 4 (printed with no margins)

5. (Plenary) Post Op Briefing - Duration 5 - 15 mins

Episode

Learning Objectives

Resources

  • A post operative style de-brief invites teams to score themselves against specific criteria e.g. accuracy (measurement and drawing), planning skills, teamwork and working under pressure. Students are invited to think of other situations in which these skills may apply.
  • Recap core skills.
  • Reinforce practical application of topic.
  • Reinforce achievements.
