Ecosystems, farming & migration

4: Eden reborn - restoring the Iraqi wetlands

Required Resources

  • Slides 12-16
  • Student Worksheets 3-4

Delivery

  • Split the class into groups of three or four, and give each group a copy of Student Worksheets 3 and 4.
  • The Worksheets ask them to imagine they are a Captain, Lieutenant and a Second Lieutenant in command of a platoon of thirty soldiers, and that their platoon is to provide security to an area of the Iraqi wetlands during the revivification process. The Worksheets give them background information on the platoon make-up, a map of the area to which they will be providing security, satellite images and a calendar. Using these information sources, and the key information they have acquired throughout the lesson, students prepare a presentation covering off background to the environmental and human crisis, a proposed schedule of activity, and all necessary mapping coordinates.
  • Time permitting, select a number of groups to present back to the class / platoon at the session close. There could be scope for a peer assessment activity here if time allows. You may like to project the map / satellite images on the OHP or IWB in order to allow students to refer to these throughout their presentation

Differentiation

Lower Ability:

Can prepare a presentation on background information only. They may like to watch Video 1 again to allow them to take notes in preparation. If the ICT facility is available, ask them to create a short Powerpoint document to support their work.
