Counter Drugs

Synopsis

This lesson gives students a contemporary and inspiring vehicle for developing and practising the skills used in writing to persuade. Students are presented with a range of exciting audio-visual stimuli on the subject of Armed Forces counter-drugs activity in Afghanistan to provide context before they commence their written task. Writing prompts are available, to assist students of all abilities and peer assessment is encouraged, with further notes available to support students in their critical work as well.

Learning Outcomes

Lower ability students will:
  • Recollect some prior learning of the 'writing to persuade' skill set.
  • Be able to identify sample text as demonstrating persuasive techniques.
  • Be able to write to persuade with some thinking given to argument structure.
  • Be able to analyse the work of others and give limited feedback.
  • To know why British Forces are important in anti-drug work in Afghanistan.
Average ability students will:
  • Recollect the majority of prior learning of the 'writing to persuade' skill set and be able to employ these skills.
  • Be able to deliver a good analysis of sample text with the ability to appreciate the writer's techniques and cross-reference some writing theory with the extract.
  • Be able to write to persuade demonstrating an arguments structure and good form.
  • Be able to analyse the work of others well with some feedback.
  • Be able to explain why British Forces are important in anti-drug work in Afghanistan.
Higher ability students will:
  • Recollect all prior learning of the 'writing to persuade' skill set clearly and be able to employ these skills effectively.
  • Analyse sample text in detail with the ability to appreciate the writer's techniques and cross-reference writing theory with the extract.
  • Be able to write to persuade demonstrating coherent arguments and excellent form.
  • Be able to analyse the work of others sensitively and supportively with constructive feedback for future use.
  • Be able to explain why British Forces are important in anti-drug work in Afghanistan.
