Royal Corps of Signals
Synopsis
This lesson provides a comprehensive introduction to radio waves and microwaves. Multi-media resources and interactive exercises reinforce understanding of civilian applications and the move towards wireless transmissions. The work of the Royal Corps of Signals, IT and communications providers for the Army, is used to provide an exciting real life context for applications of microwave and radio wave technology, with everyday civilian examples drawn on as well.

Learning Outcomes
Lower ability students will:- Understand some of the needs for devices that utilise either microwaves or radio waves for the transmission of information, according to environment.
- Be able to explain some of the key properties of microwaves and radio waves and provide some applied examples of each.
- Understand that microwaves and radio waves are both forms of radiation, used to transmit a signal that is then converted by a receiver.
- Be aware of some applications of wireless technology.
- Be able to identify an application of radio wave and microwaves for communication purposes.
- Understand the need for devices that utilise either microwaves or radio waves for the transmission of information, according to environment.
- Be able to explain most of the key properties of microwaves and radio waves and provide applied examples of each.
- Understand that microwaves and radio waves are both forms of radiation, used to transmit a signal that is then converted by a receiver.
- Be familiar with some applications of wireless technology.
- Be able to name a number of applications of radio wave and microwaves for communication purposes.
