Vaccinations and their risks
1. Starter - What vaccines have we had?
Required Resources
- Slides 1-5
Delivery
- Slides show images of vaccines being administered orally and via injection. This scene should be familiar to students and may provoke some interest and empathy.
- Having asked students to confirm what they thought they have just watched, invite students to volunteer the names of some of the vaccinations they have had.
- Slide 3 features a list of childhood vaccinations now offered as standard in the UK, though note that not all students will have had all of these as some have only been introduced relatively recently. You may wish to project this and ask students to volunteer the names of diseases against which residents of other countries will require vaccination.
- Finally project Slide 5 which shows a table indicating diseases that are prevalent in various global locations. Ask students to identify specific patterns (e.g. cases of Cholera are highest in African regions and lowest in The Americas). They should be able to identify that disease is far more prevalent in less economically developed countries.
- Answers to the Slides and Student Worksheets are downloaded in the Teacher notes.
Differentiation
Lower Ability:
Omit the second half of the Episode which puts vaccination into a global context and instead ask students to identify how many of the vaccinations offered to UK residents they recognise. Time permitting it may be a useful exercise to hand this list out to students during the previous lesson and ask them to research which vaccines they have had.
