Refugee situation - Balkans 1990s

Synopsis

In this lesson, students look at a forced migration case study, the refugee situation in the Balkans in the late 1990s. Students recap on the main classifications of migration, and push and pull factors before looking at the Balkans case study in detail. Students consider causes of the migration, the experience of the refugees, the systems set up to deal with the flow of migration, and impacts on the receiving countries.

  • Be able to outline most of the factors that influence migration.
  • Be able to explain the difference between types of migration and some of the ways in which they work.
  • Understand most of the functions of humanitarian aid in refugee situations.
  • Have an awareness of the MOD's humanitarian role.
  • Understand some of the impacts of migration on receiving countries both long and short term.
Higher ability students will:
  • Be able to outline the full spectrum of factors that influence migration.
  • Be able to explain the difference between types of migration and how they work and are able to cite examples.
  • Understand the breadth humanitarian aid in refugee situations and the nature of interdependence.
  • Have an awareness of the MOD's humanitarian role.
  • Have a firm grasp of the multiple impacts of migration on receiving countries both long and short term.
