Energy and resources

4: Future fuels

Required Resources

  • Student Worksheets 3-4
  • Slides 8-9

Delivery

  • Split the class into groups of three or four. Give each group a copy of Student Worksheets 3 and 4.
  • Explain that energy and fuel are very important to the British Armed forces for various reasons, for example because of the range of vehicles they run and operational buildings they maintain. Impact on the environment of energy consumption and the dwindling reserves of non-renewable fuels worldwide are very much areas of concern for them. Because of this, the MOD support studies into more sustainable sources of energy.
  • Student Worksheets 3 and 4 contain information on different sustainable fuel sources. Using the information on the Worksheets, students should select an energy source that they think the British Armed Forces could use in the future, to fuel some of their vehicles more sustainably, and prepare a short presentation championing their chosen source. If ICT facilities are available, students can use PowerPoint to support their presentation.
  • A selected number of groups can present before the class discuss. Alternatively, you may like to pair groups up and ask them to conduct a peer assessment exercise, presenting and assessing the success of each other's case.
