Speaking and listening - group

2. Prioritising aid in a humanitarian crisis

Required Resources

  • Student Worksheet 1
  • Slides 6 - 8

Delivery

  • Split students into groups of three to four.
  • Explain to the groups that the UK provided military advisory teams to the UN planning authority in the wake of the Pakistan-administered Kashmir earthquake. These teams provided help in developing a plan of action, making sure that available resources were allocated in the best way possible and that the worst affected areas in Kashmir were provided with aid first.
  • Student Worksheet 1 houses a 'list of need' attached to the Pakistan-administered Kashmir earthquake relief effort. In their groups, students should rank the needs in order of perceived priority. Students should be given five to ten minutes to debate their list.
  • Discuss student rankings as a class, asking groups to justify their decisions.

Differentiation

Lower Ability:

Ensure that groups are of mixed ability. You may like to circulate while groups are debating the list, prompting less confident individuals to ensure their involvement in the discussion.

Higher Ability:

You may like to ask one or two higher ability students to circulate the classroom on your behalf, prompting and aiding discussion within groups where necessary.
