Speaking and listening - group

1. Starter - Setting the scene

Required Resources

  • Video: Footage of humanitarian aid work after the Kashmir earthquake
  • Student Worksheet 1
  • Slides 1-5

Delivery

  • Show students Slide 2 and ask them what they know about the 2005 earthquake in Pakistan-administered Kashmir.
  • Explain to students that they are going to undertake a speaking and listening activity on the subject of the humanitarian aid efforts in Kashmir following the earthquake.
  • Distribute Student Worksheet 1 to students. You may like to read through the background information on Student Worksheet 1 as a class to ensure that students have a full understanding of the earthquake and its impacts and to allow time for questions or any discussion of associated issues.
  • Play the Video. Students should take notes while watching the footage, to aid them with the forthcoming exercise. Tell students that the death toll reached around 80,000. Explain that with international disasters, particularly those that take place in the developing world, there is a need for both immediate and long-term aid to be supplied.

Differentiation

Lower Ability:

It may take some groups of students time to assimilate the Pakistan context, before moving on to the decision-making exercise and presentation. You may like to play the video twice.
