West Indies Guard Ships / Hurricane Ivan

Synopsis

This lesson explores hurricanes in the Caribbean sea region. The opening activity invites students to consider the Royal Navy West Indies Guard Ships and their role during hurricane season. The lesson continues with study of the major world hurricane zones, the formation of hurricanes with a focus on the case study of Hurricane Ivan in Grenada in 2004, and the Royal Navy's role in aid efforts. Students are invited to call on their knowledge to write the script for a news report on the sequence of events that unfolded.

  • Have a good understanding of tropical storms, with the ability to sketch and label diagrams to a fair level, including those showing formation.
  • Demonstrate a good understanding of interdependence, with the ability to cite some examples.
  • Be able to use a range of resources from which they can extract, consolidate and present back a fair analysis of the available information.
  • Have a good understanding of what constitutes humanitarian aid and why it is necessary.
Higher ability students will:
  • Have a detailed understanding of tropical storms, with the ability to sketch and label diagrams accurately, including those showing formation.
  • Demonstrate excellent understanding of the nature of international interdependence, with the ability to cite multiple examples.
  • Be able to use a range of resources from which they can extract, consolidate and present back a detailed analysis of available information.
  • Have a detailed understanding of what constitutes humanitarian aid, why it is necessary, and are able to link into the topic of interdependence.
