5. Forecasting data 2012-2017

Required Resources

  • Slide 16
  • Student Worksheet 3

Delivery

  • This final episode steps back from the Hurricane Katrina case study to review longer-term forecasting carried out by Meteorological Offices worldwide. Slide 16 illustrates further extreme weather patterns (e.g. drought / famine/ global warming / sea level rises).
  • Students will already be familiar with the term 'global warming' but may not have previously considered when / how this data is captured and the need for humans to be able to anticipate its impact on society long-term.
  • Student Worksheet 3-3a feature long-range forecasting data and invites students to consider and brainstorm the impact of extensive climate change in the UK over the next 20-30 years. This is likely to prompt quite an animated response as students discover (for example) the likely sea level rises around Europe, or the impact on ski resorts in Europe.
  • Rather than answer a series of questions, students should review the data and draw up their own long-range forecast using the data available. Various topics are suggested for them to theme their findings around; this will help them to focus their approach and also consider the human (and real) application of their findings.

Differentiation

Higher Ability:

Mixed ability groups will work well for this exercise. Students should present back to the class, who might wish to add further thoughts.
