2. Narrowing the search - Duration 15-25 mins

  • This task introduces the work of the MRT. Project Slides 1-7 which present an overview of the RAF Mountain Rescue Team and then consider how / why identification of loci might aid their work (even where a specific point cannot be identified).
  • In this role-play students must quickly help pinpoint the site of an aircraft believed to have crashed shortly after take off.
  • Presented with various information (not all of which is relevant) students compile a search brief for the RAF Mountain Rescue Team and calculate when help is likely to get to the scene.

3. Identifying an exact location - Duration 15-20 mins

  • Students work in teams using the information provided to brief the RAF Mountain Rescue Team searching for two mountaineers. These men left specific information concerning their destination and planned journey time but are now overdue and weather conditions are worsening.

4. Lateral thinking - Duration 15-20 mins

  • Students are then presented with a final imaginary scenario, concerning the fate of a group of hillwalkers. This final task takes an unexpected twist on classroom discussion of findings with the victims in this case being finally found underground (potholing). Possible alternatives include being found at height (i.e. on a ledge of cliff-top).
