3. Creating a recruitment advertisement - writing to persuade

Required Resources

  • Video: RAF recruitment advertisement
  • Slides 9-10

Delivery

  • Students to be shown the video and ask them to compare it with the video played earlier, briefly discussing the differences despite being part of the same campaign. Using the TV advertisement as stimulus, students should work in groups or pairs to create their own poster or magazine advertisement to support the TV campaign. This is an opportunity for students to demonstrate their understanding of the techniques identified in the previous activity, so they should be encouraged to include some of these devices in their advertisement.
  • It can be suggested that groups assume roles for this activity (e.g. copywriter, creative director, strategic planner etc) in recognition of some of the key roles found in the advertising industry.
  • Students should plan their campaign carefully, ensuring that they are able to explain the rationale behind their campaign, including the reasons that they chose the format that they did.
  • If further time is allowed for this activity, students can be encouraged to utilise any available ICT or art and design facilities to complete their advertisement.

Differentiation

Lower Ability:

Student Worksheet 3 should be made available to lower ability students throughout this activity.
