Looking at advertising

2. Analysing written advertisements in detail

Required Resources

  • Student Worksheets 2-4
  • Slides 6-8

Delivery

  • For this activity students should work in pairs or small groups with each group being provided with a copy of Student Worksheets 2-4.
  • Students should discuss the efficacy of the advertisement on Student Worksheet 2, using the literary techniques breakdown on Student Worksheet 3 and the prompt table on Student Worksheet 4. Ask students to consider whether similar techniques are used over different formats (i.e. video and written).
  • Specific areas of focus should be:
    • a. Language: what literary techniques are employed in the advertisement?
    • b. Visual impact: what images are used and to what effect?
    • c. Message: is there a clear audience message / call to action?
    • d. Target audience: who is the advertisement aimed at and what devices are employed to lead students to this conclusion?
    • e. Logos: are there any logos? Each group should then present their feedback to the rest of the class, ensuring that all group members participate.

Differentiation

Mixed ability groups should be encouraged to facilitate differentiation requirements.
