Biography and autobiography

3. Using information to develop a written piece

Required Resources

  • Student Worksheet 3-4
  • Slides 9-15
  • Video: Introduction to the RAF Mountain Rescue Team

Delivery

  • One Student Worksheet should be provided for each student for this activity. Students are going to produce a biographical account of the incident report found on Worksheet 4 (it is also available for display on Slides 9-10). Firstly the students can be encouraged to work with a partner and conduct a 'hot seat' activity to flesh out the story further. Encourage one of each pair to assume the role of the victim and the other to adopt the role of one of the attending personnel.
  • Having developed more detail from the hot seat exercise the students should then be encouraged to complete their written accounts alone, using the guide on Worksheet 4 for help. Visual stimulus is provided on Slides 11-13.
  • Slides 14-15 provide some pointers for students to use when writing their biographical piece.
  • Once complete, students can work in pairs to discuss the similarities and differences between their pieces of writing.

Differentiation

Lower Ability:

Lower ability students can be encouraged to work in pairs for the whole of this activity.

Higher Ability:

You could ask students to identify ways in which the report might be different if it was rewritten by a. the woman who was rescued or b. a local reporter for a regional radio station.
