Delivery
- This starter encourages students to consider what might constitute a healthy diet for soldiers carrying out various roles and in various locations.
- Show students Video: Food for Thought, and split the class into pairs. Ask students to brainstorm the key considerations which the Armed Forces must make with regards to nutrition. This should include issues such as the levels of energy required by a soldier and why this would change between different conditions and operations. Allow five minutes for the brainstorm.
- Conduct a 10 minute classroom debate on the key principles of Army catering, including the needs of different groups (ethnic, dietary likes and dislikes etc) and record the key points on the board.
- This exercise is supported by Slides 1-4.
Differentiation
Lower Ability:
Write a list of key words and their definition on the board for lower ability students.
Higher Ability:
Students should also consider the emotional aspect of nutrition in supporting soldiers' morale when away on operations.
