Earthquakes

4. Immediate impacts and human response

Required Resources

  • Video: Footage of humanitarian aid work after the earthquake
  • Slides 12-14
  • Video: Article on the Army Engineers' involvement in Pakistan-administered Kashmir (additional)
  • News Article: Pakistan Prime Minister meets the troops

Delivery

  • Show students the film of humanitarian aid work taking place in Pakistan-administered Kashmir after the earthquake on the IWB or OHP.
  • Still in their groups of three to four, students should make a list of the different types of short-term aid that needed to be delivered to the survivors of the earthquake. Once they have made their list, they should rank the types of aid according to perceived importance. To guide their thinking, inform students that short-term aid in this instance is measurable within a time-frame of days to weeks.
  • There is some supplementary footage available, of the Army Engineers' involvement in Pakistan-administered Kashmir if required. Plus a News Article that reports on the meeting between Pakistan's Prime Minister and the UK's earthquake-relief troops.

Differentiation

Higher Ability:

Students can draw up a list of potential medium and long term aid required in Kashmir as well (medium term being measurable in weeks to months, and long term in months to years).
